President Nana Akufo-Addo Visits Burkina Faso Amid Diplomatic Tensions

A Visit Following Controversial Remarks

Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo visited Burkina Faso on Wednesday, marking his first trip to the country five months after making controversial remarks about the presence of Russian Wagner mercenaries in Burkina Faso. His comments, which linked the Wagner Group to Burkina Faso’s ongoing jihadist violence, had previously strained diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Closed-Door Meeting with Captain Ibrahim Traoré

The visit was not open to the media, but the Burkinabe Presidency confirmed that Akufo-Addo met with Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the transitional president who seized power in a coup on September 30, 2022. Their discussions reportedly focused on regional security issues, particularly the growing security challenges both nations face.

Diplomatic Dispute Over Wagner Group Allegations

Akufo-Addo’s visit comes in the wake of a diplomatic dispute that erupted following his December 2024 statements. During a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, he claimed that Burkina Faso had:

  • Engaged the Wagner Group, similar to Mali.
  • Allocated a mine in southern Burkina Faso as payment for Wagner’s services.
  • Allowed Russian mercenaries to be stationed near the Ghana-Burkina Faso border.

Burkina Faso’s Strong Response

The Burkinabe government reacted harshly to Akufo-Addo’s remarks, describing them as “very serious” and taking the following actions:

  • Recalling its ambassador from Accra in protest.
  • Summoning Ghana’s ambassador to Ouagadougou for an explanation.
  • Issuing a formal protest note, expressing that the country was “deeply affected” by the statements.

Burkina Faso Denies Wagner Presence, Strengthens Russian Ties

Captain Ibrahim Traoré and his government have repeatedly denied any formal engagement with Wagner mercenaries. However, Burkina Faso has strengthened its ties with Russia, particularly after expelling French military forces from Ouagadougou.

On May 4, 2024, Traoré officially declared Russia a “strategic ally”, signaling a shift in Burkina Faso’s foreign policy. This growing alliance with Russia has raised concerns among Western nations, further complicating Burkina Faso’s diplomatic standing in the region.
