President Mahama Urges Youth to Seize Opportunities and Build a Self-Sufficient Ghana

Youth Must Take Charge of Ghana’s Economic Future

President John Dramani Mahama has called on young Ghanaians to step up, seize government opportunities, and contribute to building a self-sufficient nation. Speaking at the 68th Independence Day Anniversary on Thursday, he emphasized that Ghana’s economic future lies in the hands of its youth.

Agriculture as the Key to Reducing Import Dependency

Highlighting agriculture as Ghana’s biggest opportunity to reduce reliance on imports, President Mahama revealed that the country spends over $2 billion annually on food imports. To tackle this issue, the government has introduced the Agriculture for Economic Transformation Agenda (AETA), aimed at strengthening local agribusiness and ensuring food security.

Feed Ghana Programme and Poultry Farm-to-Table Initiative

As part of efforts to boost agricultural productivity, the Feed Ghana Programme will drive mass food production and stabilize prices. Additionally, the Poultry Farm-to-Table Initiative is designed to enhance domestic poultry production and processing, addressing Ghana’s 95% dependence on imported poultry.

Active Citizen Participation is Key

President Mahama stressed that the success of these policies relies heavily on citizen participation, particularly from young people.

“This is a defining moment, but policies alone, no matter how well-crafted, will not change our reality—action will. As your president, I am taking the necessary actions to create growth opportunities and enhance our economic independence.”

AgriNext Programme to Equip 30,000 Youth

To encourage youth involvement in agriculture, the government has introduced the AgriNext Programme, which will provide 30,000 young Ghanaians with land, training, and agribusiness opportunities.

Farmer Service Centres to Boost Local Production

To further enhance agricultural development and ensure food security, Farmer Service Centres will be established in every district. These centers will provide access to mechanization, quality seeds, and fertilizers, enabling local farmers to increase food production.

Ghana’s Independence: A Legacy of Self-Determination

President Mahama reflected on Ghana’s independence, describing it as the single most important event in the nation’s history. He noted that Ghana’s independence ignited a wave of liberation across Sub-Saharan Africa, inspiring other nations under colonial rule to seek self-determination.

With these bold initiatives, the president reaffirmed his commitment to economic growth, youth empowerment, and national self-sufficiency—urging all Ghanaians to embrace the opportunities ahead.
