GEAG Urges Government to Act<\/strong><\/h2>

The Ghana Environmental Advocacy Group (GEAG)<\/strong> has called on the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources<\/strong> to take decisive action<\/strong> to stop illegal mining (galamsey) activities<\/strong> in the Ankobra River<\/strong>, particularly in the Gwira area<\/strong>.<\/p>

Severe Pollution Threatens Water Bodies and Marine Life<\/strong><\/h2>

According to the group, the rapid pollution<\/strong> of the Ankobra River due to chemical contamination<\/strong> and alluvial deposits<\/strong> from illegal mining<\/strong> is causing severe environmental damage. The destruction of water bodies<\/strong> and the harmful effects on marine species<\/strong> require urgent intervention<\/strong> from the government.<\/p>

GEAG Convenor Calls for Drastic Measures<\/strong><\/h2>

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA)<\/strong> after visiting several communities along the Ankobra River in Gwira<\/strong>, Madam Elizabeth Allua Vaah<\/strong>, Convenor of GEAG<\/strong>, urged the government to take bold steps<\/strong> in clamping down on illegal miners<\/strong> and those engaged in irresponsible mining<\/strong>.<\/p>

She stated that galamsey activities<\/strong> in the Ankobra River are the primary cause of the river\u2019s pollution<\/strong>, and she expressed concern that toxic chemicals<\/strong> from these activities are flowing into the sea at Ankobra<\/strong>, contaminating marine life<\/strong> and possibly poisoning fish stocks<\/strong>.<\/p>

Rising Concerns Over Polluted Seaweed and Fish Consumption<\/strong><\/h2>

Madam Allua Vaah linked the high metal content<\/strong> of the Sargassum seaweed<\/strong> that has invaded the coastline to galamsey pollution<\/strong>, raising alarm over the potential health risks.<\/p>

\u201cIf the seaweeds are this polluted, how much more are the fish that people consume daily?\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>

She lamented that the government appears powerless<\/strong> in its fight against galamsey<\/strong> in Ghana\u2019s river bodies<\/strong>.<\/p>

Call for Awareness on Health Impacts of Galamsey<\/strong><\/h2>

The Convenor of GEAG<\/strong> also urged the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE)<\/strong> and the Ghana Health Service<\/strong> to educate the public on the long-term health consequences of illegal mining<\/strong> and its impact on drinking water sources<\/strong> and food safety<\/strong>.<\/p>

Assembly Member Condemns Ongoing Galamsey Activities<\/strong><\/h2>

The Assembly Member for Gwira-Dominase, Mr. James Akpor<\/strong>, strongly condemned ongoing galamsey operations<\/strong> in several communities along the Ankobra River.<\/p>

He identified the following communities as hotspots for illegal mining<\/strong>:<\/p>

  • Awolezo<\/strong><\/li>
  • Amgbrazee<\/strong><\/li>
  • Duale<\/strong><\/li>
  • Betenase<\/strong><\/li>
  • Gwira-Banso<\/strong><\/li>
  • Tumandu<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>

    According to Mr. Akpor<\/strong>, the Western Regional Minister, Mr. Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah<\/strong>, and the galamsey task force<\/strong> recently visited the area but failed to make any arrests<\/strong> as the illegal miners had changed their tactics<\/strong>.<\/p>

    Galamsey Operators Evading Arrest<\/strong><\/h2>

    Mr. Akpor explained that galamsey operators<\/strong> have developed new strategies<\/strong> to evade law enforcement.<\/p>

    • Sinking their boats<\/strong> into the river and hiding when they hear of patrols.<\/li>
    • Operating mainly at night<\/strong>, making it difficult for authorities to catch them.<\/li><\/ul>

      Impact on Local Communities<\/strong><\/h2>

      The galamsey menace<\/strong> has severely impacted communities along the Ankobra River<\/strong>.<\/p>

      • Residents no longer have access to clean drinking water<\/strong> and now rely on sachet water<\/strong>, which has become an additional financial burden<\/strong>.<\/li>
      • Environmental degradation is worsening, threatening livelihoods<\/strong> and public health<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>

        Community Mobilization Against Galamsey<\/strong><\/h2>

        In an effort to combat illegal mining, Mr. Akpor recently mobilized local youth<\/strong> to destroy some of the galamsey sites<\/strong>.<\/p>

        Government\u2019s Response<\/strong><\/h2>

        When contacted, Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Mr. George Mireku Duker<\/strong>, told GNA<\/strong>:<\/p>

        \u201cWe\u2019ve been notified, and our men are on the ground to do the needful.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>

        However, with illegal mining continuing unchecked<\/strong>, environmental groups and community leaders remain skeptical<\/strong> and are demanding immediate and decisive action<\/strong> to protect Ghana\u2019s water bodies<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/article>
