Yet, conflicts between neighboring nations continue to threaten the continent\u2019s unity. The latest flashpoint? A drone dispute between <strong data-start=\"689\" data-end=\"709\">Mali and Algeria<\/strong> that risks snowballing into a regional crisis.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-24faaeb e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"24faaeb\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b08e871 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b08e871\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"\" data-start=\"758\" data-end=\"812\">THE $30 MILLION QUESTION: WHY SHOOT DOWN THE DRONE?<\/h2><p class=\"\" data-start=\"814\" data-end=\"1177\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2702 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/cmtv.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Akinci-Surveilance_drone3bSM-1024x538.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"618\" height=\"325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cmtv.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Akinci-Surveilance_drone3bSM-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cmtv.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Akinci-Surveilance_drone3bSM-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cmtv.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Akinci-Surveilance_drone3bSM-768x403.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cmtv.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Akinci-Surveilance_drone3bSM.jpg 1120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 618px) 100vw, 618px\" \/>On the night of <strong data-start=\"830\" data-end=\"850\">March 31st, 2025<\/strong>, a Turkish-manufactured <strong data-start=\"875\" data-end=\"904\">Akinci surveillance drone<\/strong> operated by the Malian military was on a mission in Mali\u2019s far northeast. Its target: terrorist groups threatening national security. However, before the mission could be completed, the drone was <strong data-start=\"1101\" data-end=\"1114\">shot down<\/strong>, crashing in <strong data-start=\"1128\" data-end=\"1142\">Tinzawaten<\/strong>, close to the Algeria-Mali border.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1179\" data-end=\"1390\">Algeria claimed the drone had <strong data-start=\"1209\" data-end=\"1257\">violated its airspace by over two kilometers<\/strong> and labeled it an &#8220;armed surveillance drone.&#8221; Mali disagreed\u2014stating the drone was flying <strong data-start=\"1348\" data-end=\"1389\">10 kilometers within Malian territory<\/strong>.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1392\" data-end=\"1527\">So why did Algeria fire without warning? Could this have been handled diplomatically? Or is there something deeper beneath the surface?<\/p><h2 class=\"\" data-start=\"1529\" data-end=\"1576\">THE AFTERMATH: CONDEMNATIONS AND ACCUSATIONS<\/h2><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1578\" data-end=\"1788\">Malian military leader <strong data-start=\"1601\" data-end=\"1617\">Assimi Go\u00efta<\/strong>, supported by <strong data-start=\"1632\" data-end=\"1652\">President Traor\u00e9<\/strong>, condemned the attack. Mali\u2019s <strong data-start=\"1683\" data-end=\"1723\">Prime Minister, Gen. Abdoulaye Ma\u00efga<\/strong>, went even further\u2014accusing Algeria of <strong data-start=\"1763\" data-end=\"1787\">sponsoring terrorism<\/strong>.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1790\" data-end=\"1988\">Why? Because the destroyed drone was reportedly tracking a <strong data-start=\"1849\" data-end=\"1870\">terrorist meeting<\/strong>\u2014intelligence that could have prevented future attacks. The drone\u2019s loss wasn\u2019t just financial\u2014it may have cost lives.<\/p><h2 class=\"\" data-start=\"1990\" data-end=\"2031\">THE PEOPLE RESPOND: PROTESTS IN BAMAKO<\/h2><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2033\" data-end=\"2284\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2706 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/cmtv.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/protestores_in_Bamaco2-1024x559.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"618\" height=\"337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cmtv.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/protestores_in_Bamaco2-1024x559.png 1024w, https:\/\/cmtv.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/protestores_in_Bamaco2-300x164.png 300w, https:\/\/cmtv.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/protestores_in_Bamaco2-768x419.png 768w, https:\/\/cmtv.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/protestores_in_Bamaco2.png 1408w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 618px) 100vw, 618px\" \/>The incident sparked outrage. Thousands of Malians took to the streets of <strong data-start=\"2107\" data-end=\"2117\">Bamako<\/strong>, denouncing what they called Algeria\u2019s <strong data-start=\"2157\" data-end=\"2171\">aggression<\/strong>. The protests, led by the <strong data-start=\"2198\" data-end=\"2238\">National Youth Council of Mali (CNJ)<\/strong>, framed Algeria as a double-dealing neighbor:<\/p><blockquote data-start=\"2286\" data-end=\"2409\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2288\" data-end=\"2409\">\u201cAlgiers has always played a double game with Mali. We just want a normal and honest relationship,\u201d one protester stated.<\/p><\/blockquote><h2 class=\"\" data-start=\"2411\" data-end=\"2458\">THE AES STRIKES BACK: DIPLOMATIC WITHDRAWALS<\/h2><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2460\" data-end=\"2664\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2657 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cmtv.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/AES-Logo-282x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"282\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cmtv.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/AES-Logo-282x300.jpg 282w, https:\/\/cmtv.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/AES-Logo-963x1024.jpg 963w, https:\/\/cmtv.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/AES-Logo-768x817.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cmtv.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/AES-Logo-1444x1536.jpg 1444w, https:\/\/cmtv.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/AES-Logo.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 282px) 100vw, 282px\" \/>The <strong data-start=\"2464\" data-end=\"2498\">Alliance of Sahel States (AES)<\/strong>, which includes Mali, <strong data-start=\"2521\" data-end=\"2564\">withdrew their ambassadors from Algeria<\/strong>, citing a violation of international law. In a strongly worded statement, AES labeled the incident:<\/p><blockquote data-start=\"2666\" data-end=\"2769\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2668\" data-end=\"2769\">\u201cAn aggression against the entire Confederation\u2026 and contrary to historical and fraternal relations.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2771\" data-end=\"2977\">Tensions rose. Both <strong data-start=\"2791\" data-end=\"2833\">Mali and Algeria closed their airspace<\/strong>, directly affecting commercial flights and dealing a blow to <strong data-start=\"2895\" data-end=\"2910\">Air Alg\u00e9rie<\/strong>, which had become vital in the region after <strong data-start=\"2955\" data-end=\"2976\">Air France&#8217;s exit<\/strong>.<\/p><h2 class=\"\" data-start=\"2979\" data-end=\"3025\">DIPLOMACY TURNS LEGAL: MALI\u2019S INVESTIGATION<\/h2><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3027\" data-end=\"3127\">Mali didn\u2019t stop at protests and statements. The country launched a <strong data-start=\"3095\" data-end=\"3121\">judicial investigation<\/strong> into:<\/p><ul data-start=\"3129\" data-end=\"3241\"><li class=\"\" data-start=\"3129\" data-end=\"3152\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3131\" data-end=\"3152\"><strong data-start=\"3131\" data-end=\"3152\">Acts of terrorism<\/strong><\/p><\/li><li class=\"\" data-start=\"3153\" data-end=\"3178\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3155\" data-end=\"3178\"><strong data-start=\"3155\" data-end=\"3178\">Financing terrorism<\/strong><\/p><\/li><li class=\"\" data-start=\"3179\" data-end=\"3214\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3181\" data-end=\"3214\"><strong data-start=\"3181\" data-end=\"3214\">Illegal possession of weapons<\/strong><\/p><\/li><li class=\"\" data-start=\"3215\" data-end=\"3241\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3217\" data-end=\"3241\"><strong data-start=\"3217\" data-end=\"3241\">Criminal association<\/strong><\/p><\/li><\/ul><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3243\" data-end=\"3451\">Furthermore, Mali submitted a <strong data-start=\"3273\" data-end=\"3310\">letter to the UN Security Council<\/strong>, laying out its case. Algeria followed suit, sending its own version of events\u2014though neither has formally requested UN intervention&#8230; yet.<\/p><h2 class=\"\" data-start=\"3453\" data-end=\"3485\">REGIONAL BODIES URGE DIALOGUE<\/h2><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3487\" data-end=\"3645\">The <strong data-start=\"3491\" data-end=\"3501\">ECOWAS<\/strong> bloc expressed \u201cdeep concern\u201d and urged both nations to <strong data-start=\"3558\" data-end=\"3572\">deescalate<\/strong>, favoring diplomacy over conflict. But the elephant in the room remains:<\/p><blockquote data-start=\"3647\" data-end=\"3698\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3649\" data-end=\"3698\"><strong data-start=\"3649\" data-end=\"3698\">Why did Algeria really shoot down that drone?<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3700\" data-end=\"3776\">To answer this, we must look into the <strong data-start=\"3738\" data-end=\"3775\">history between the two countries<\/strong>.<\/p><h2 class=\"\" data-start=\"3778\" data-end=\"3819\">A HISTORY OF TENSION: MALI AND ALGERIA<\/h2><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3821\" data-end=\"4017\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2714 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/cmtv.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Algeria_Mali_History4-1024x559.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"618\" height=\"337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cmtv.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Algeria_Mali_History4-1024x559.png 1024w, https:\/\/cmtv.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Algeria_Mali_History4-300x164.png 300w, https:\/\/cmtv.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Algeria_Mali_History4-768x419.png 768w, https:\/\/cmtv.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Algeria_Mali_History4.png 1408w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 618px) 100vw, 618px\" \/>Though Mali and Algeria share <strong data-start=\"3851\" data-end=\"3869\">colonial roots<\/strong>, their post-independence relationship has been rocky\u2014especially over the <strong data-start=\"3943\" data-end=\"3969\">1,300-kilometer border<\/strong> and the <strong data-start=\"3978\" data-end=\"3999\">Tuareg rebellions<\/strong> in northern Mali.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"4019\" data-end=\"4303\">Since 1962, Algeria has played a mediating role in <strong data-start=\"4070\" data-end=\"4105\">four different peace agreements<\/strong> involving Mali and Tuareg rebels. The most notable of these was the <strong data-start=\"4174\" data-end=\"4197\">2015 Algiers Accord<\/strong>, aimed at stabilizing the region by integrating rebels into the national army and granting more autonomy.<\/p><h2 class=\"\" data-start=\"4305\" data-end=\"4362\">SHIFT IN DYNAMICS: MILITARY COUPS &amp; REJECTED MEDIATION<\/h2><p class=\"\" data-start=\"4364\" data-end=\"4560\">Following the military coups in <strong data-start=\"4396\" data-end=\"4404\">2020<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"4409\" data-end=\"4417\">2022<\/strong>, Mali\u2019s new leadership shifted course\u2014<strong data-start=\"4456\" data-end=\"4494\">rejecting Algeria\u2019s mediation role<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"4499\" data-end=\"4538\">withdrawing from the Algiers Accord<\/strong> in <strong data-start=\"4542\" data-end=\"4559\">December 2023<\/strong>.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"4562\" data-end=\"4750\">This decision was triggered by Algeria\u2019s <strong data-start=\"4603\" data-end=\"4647\">unauthorized meetings with rebel leaders<\/strong>, seen by Bamako as clear interference. Mali recalled its ambassador, signaling the breakdown in trust.<\/p><h2 class=\"\" data-start=\"4752\" data-end=\"4801\">STRATEGIC CALCULATIONS OR TERRITORIAL DEFENSE?<\/h2><p class=\"\" data-start=\"4803\" data-end=\"5041\">Many analysts believe Algeria\u2019s drone takedown may be part of a broader <strong data-start=\"4875\" data-end=\"4909\">strategy to reassert influence<\/strong> over Mali. Hosting various <strong data-start=\"4937\" data-end=\"4960\">opposition factions<\/strong>, Algeria has used these groups to maintain leverage against Bamako\u2019s government.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"5043\" data-end=\"5188\">While Algeria may not seek regime change in Mali, it likely wants to shape the country&#8217;s <strong data-start=\"5132\" data-end=\"5174\">foreign policy and security trajectory<\/strong>\u2014on its terms.<\/p><h2 class=\"\" data-start=\"5190\" data-end=\"5217\">REGIONAL UNITY IN CRISIS<\/h2><p class=\"\" data-start=\"5219\" data-end=\"5409\">This conflict isn\u2019t just about a drone\u2014it symbolizes the <strong data-start=\"5276\" data-end=\"5306\">fragility of African unity<\/strong>. Diplomatic relations have soured. Commercial air routes are disrupted.
