But now, the focus is shifting from large, iconic species to smaller, lesser-known creatures. And <strong data-start=\"1006\" data-end=\"1014\">ants<\/strong> are becoming a hot commodity.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1046\" data-end=\"1263\">Among the recent arrests were <strong data-start=\"1076\" data-end=\"1101\">two Belgian teenagers<\/strong>, found with thousands of ants stashed in their guesthouse. They now face charges of <em data-start=\"1186\" data-end=\"1203\">wildlife piracy<\/em>. In court, they appeared distraught. The teens allegedly made <strong data-start=\"1485\" data-end=\"1508\">calculated attempts<\/strong> to smuggle the ants \u2014 capturing over <strong data-start=\"1546\" data-end=\"1560\">5,000 ants<\/strong>, storing them in <strong data-start=\"1578\" data-end=\"1616\">test tubes filled with cotton wool<\/strong>, a technique that could keep the ants alive for months while disguising them.<\/p><hr class=\"\" data-start=\"1696\" data-end=\"1699\" \/><h2 class=\"\" data-start=\"1701\" data-end=\"1743\"><strong data-start=\"1704\" data-end=\"1743\">A Multinational Operation Uncovered<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1745\" data-end=\"1943\">In a separate case, <strong data-start=\"1765\" data-end=\"1838\">two other men \u2014 one Kenyan, one Vietnamese \u2014 were arrested in Nairobi<\/strong> with more than 400 ants in their apartments. All four individuals now face wildlife trafficking charges.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1945\" data-end=\"2046\">This may sound absurd \u2014 smuggling ants? But it&#8217;s not a joke. Native to East Africa, these ants are large (growing up to 25mm), bold in color, and highly exotic to collectors, especially in Europe and Asia.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2356\" data-end=\"2514\">Each ant can fetch between <strong data-start=\"2383\" data-end=\"2399\">$130 to $220<\/strong> on the black market. The total contraband uncovered was valued at <strong data-start=\"2466\" data-end=\"2513\">one million Kenyan shillings \u2014 about $7,700<\/strong>.<\/p><hr class=\"\" data-start=\"2516\" data-end=\"2519\" \/><h2 class=\"\" data-start=\"2521\" data-end=\"2553\"><strong data-start=\"2524\" data-end=\"2553\">Ants as Pets?
